The Life Sciences concentration at Soka University of America (SUA) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry beginning August 1st, 2025.

The successful candidate will demonstrate their ability to excite and engage classes and laboratories of 16 or fewer students, to develop a productive program of research and scholarship, and to engage in service. This position will support SUA’s Life Sciences concentration and robust General Education curriculum housed in a state-of-the-art science teaching and research facility.

Responsibilities:

The primary duties of this position are teaching courses in Organic Chemistry. These courses will include Organic Chemistry I & II, a project-based Organic Chemistry laboratory, and introductory chemistry according to the needs of the University. In addition, all faculty teach one or more courses in SUA’s cross-disciplinary General Education curriculum (e.g. Core, Modes of Inquiry, or Learning Cluster. All courses should engage students via project-based and active learning approaches suitable for small class sizes. The teaching load per academic year is five courses between August and May.

The successful candidate should have a well-defined plan to maintain an active research program involving undergraduates. SUA provides resources to support faculty research year-round with undergraduates through institutional research funds and student research assistantships. All SUA graduates complete a capstone (senior thesis), and successful applicants should be able to participate as mentors for students. The faculty member will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and training users on a Bruker 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer.

All faculty are also expected to take part in service roles within their academic units as well as faculty governance.

Required Qualifications: 

Applicants from all fields of Organic Chemistry are welcome, with a preference for interdisciplinary researchers in fields relevant to our Life Sciences concentration, which is designed to prepare students for careers in science, biotechnology, and medicine. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. Candidates will preferably have teaching experience in Organic Chemistry.

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Philanthropy, the Development Coordinator offers comprehensive administrative support to the Office of Development while contributing to various special initiatives.

  • Coordinate gala committee meetings, manage online invitations, and arrange catering.
  • Work with vendors and process check requests for event-day payments.
  • Create posters for Live Auction items and order any signage needed for the event.
  • Develop innovative ideas to improve the gala.

General Administrative Duties (30%)

  • Process requisitions and invoices using Workday.
  • Submit facilities and IT requests on behalf of the department.
  • Record minutes during team meetings.
  • Manage the Giving section of the Soka website.
  • Coordinate the procurement of promotional items.
  • Maintain inventory of development gifts and supplies.
  • Organize mailings as required.
  • Oversee departmental print projects from design collaboration with graphic designers to coordinating with the printer.

Bi-annual Donor Magazine (20%)

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Philanthropy to develop the table of contents for each issue.
  • Reach out to staff and faculty for article and photo contributions.

Donor Events (10%)

  • Coordinate donor events, including venue reservations, catering arrangements, rental acquisitions, floral orders, Facilities and IT requests, and post-event cleanup scheduling.

Under the general supervision of the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for the oversight of bank reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and financial statement reporting. Accounting (40%)

  • Responsible for accurate and timely bank reconciliations.
  • Record auxiliary revenue along with coordinating supporting documents from various cost centers.
  • Verification of grant spending and budget transfers for program funding.

Financial Reporting (30%)

  • Coordinates completion of all financial reports.

  • Works with outside tax preparer to complete tax returns. Prepares and submits property tax exemptions forms.
  • Prepares annual Business Operating Statement 571-L.
  • Prepares withholding calculation for Nonresident and coordinates Form 1042-S distribution to students and filing.
  • Prepare quarterly financial statements and assist in the preparation of other financial reports.

Reporting (20%)

  • Ensures the timely posting of all data to the general ledger in Workday including integrations from other systems.
  • Reviews manual journal entries for timely posting to Workday to ensure appropriateness and accuracy.
  • Maintain and review cost center budgets including budget amendments.
  • Manage expense and procurement card program.
  • Serves as liaison with the SUA’s banks and merchant services in resolving all data and procedural issues.
  • Collaborates with IT and end user cost centers on PCI DSS compliance.

Systems (10%)

  • Maintain tax determination software and tax preparation program.
  • Program Administrator of Expense/Procurement Cards.
  • Assists in implementation of additional features in Workday and in ongoing revisions of financial reporting and procedures to better serve staff, faculty, students, parents and other constituencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field required.
  • Certified Public Accountant, C.P.A. required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5-7 years progressively responsible accounting, audit or tax experience.
  • Familiarity with Workday, Sprintax, PeopleSoft and Slate preferred.

Competencies/Skills:

The Internal Events Manager, under the direction of the General Manager, and working with the Production Manager, functions to support all academic, interdepartmental, and student events, including but not limited to classes, recitals, rehearsals, club events, student affairs events, etc. The Internal Events Manager will work directly with the General Manager and the Production Manager to facilitate the smooth running of these events and be responsible for attending and overseeing each event.

  • In House Events Digital media support: Record and provide for faculty recorded class sessions (enables faculty to post virtual content for potential quarantined or absent students, etc.); Ensure the transfer of this media to the Soka PAC Marketing Manager.
  • Working with PAC staff, ensure there is consistent communication about all elements of event planning, marketing, and internal and external communications about all Internal Events, as well as post event reporting.
  • Aids in keeping the backstage area ready for use for both the university and presented shows.
  • Assume additional responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent to graduation from a four (4) year college or university in a job-related field.

Experience

  • 2-3 years of experience working in event coordination, preferably in a university setting.

Soka University of America invites applications for a part-time Science Writing Specialist to join the University Writing Center staff. The Science Writing Specialist’s primary function is to assist students, especially those concentrating in Life Sciences and Environmental Studies, in all phases of the writing process and to foster long-term development of critical thinking and academic writing skills. Although the Writing Specialist may have expertise in writing in the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, and/or Medical), they support students, faculty, and staff across the liberal arts curriculum. Tutor training and professional development are ongoing as a member of the Writing Center community.

Under the oversight of the Soka Performing Arts Center General Manager, and the supervision of the Technical Services Manager (TSM), the Lighting Technician provides all lighting and associated design support for events at the Soka Performing Arts Center.  The Lighting Technician advances lighting needs for upcoming events; leads in hanging and focusing the event lighting design; enters lighting cues into lighting console; responsible for supervising and managing a small crew of Student employees to serve in the PAC. Running all lighting for rehearsals and performances; responsible for lighting equipment inventory; maintains equipment and recommends replacement and purchasing strategies; acts as interface with any visiting lighting related crew/personnel and/or any other working lighting personnel to communicate and ensure that stage and artist lighting quality is at its optimum during both rehearsal and performance, for both the Main Concert Hall and  Black Box Theatre.
