Soka Performing Arts Center Announces 2013-2014 Symphony Performances
Soka University is pleased to announce the 2013-2014 season of symphony concerts to be held in the beautiful 1000-seat Soka Performing Arts Center. The season will include the popular Sundays At Soka with Pacific Symphony and international orchestras from Estonia and Brazil.
Sundays At Soka will continue for a second year featuring the outstanding musicians of the Pacific Symphony under the exciting leadership of Carl St.Clair. This year's featured composer is Ludwig van Beethoven. His extensive composing style will be showcased by performances including pianists Gabriela Martinez and Benjamin Pasternack, the exciting young violinist Simone Porter and the California State University, Fullerton Chorus. Performances will include:
October 20, 2013 - Overture to Egmont, Op. 84 and Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb Major, Op. 73 (Emperor) featuring Gabriela Martinez, piano
February 9, 2014 - Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 and Fantasia for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra, Op. 80 featuring Benjamin Pasternak, piano, and with the California State University Fullerton Chorus
April 27, 2014 - Romance No. 1 in G Major, Op. 40, Romance No. 2 in F Major, Op. 50 featuring Simone Porter, violin, and Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92
This season’s International Symphony Series is comprised of two outstanding orchestral offerings: the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and the Bahia Orchestra Project. Under the direction of Neeme Jarvi, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra has gained a reputation for very high quality recordings, garnering a Grammy Award for their recordings of Sibelius’ cantatas, and another Grammy nomination this past year for their recording of Martin: Golgotha. They will be joined on this tour by outstanding young cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan. Their performance on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 3:00 PM will include: Veljo Tormis - Overture No.2 ; Dvořák - Cello Concerto in B minor, Op.104 featuring Narek Hakhnazaryan, cello, and Sibelius - Symphony No.5 in E-flat major, Op.82.
The second international offering features the Bahia Orchestra Project, under the direction of Richard Castro. Modeled on the Venezuelan “El Sistema,” this Brazilian youth orchestra has won the hearts of audiences throughout Europe and Latin America. In their U.S. debut tour, they will perform Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major with the internationally acclaimed French pianist, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, along with music of their native Brazil.
Package prices are $114.00 for the three-performance Sundays At Soka series, and $76.00 for the International Symphony Series. Additional discounts are available for students and senior citizens 62 years of age or older.
Renewals for current subscribers are underway, and packages will be available for purchase by others beginning on June 5th at 10:00 am. Single tickets will go on sale in mid-July. Single ticket prices will be $58.00 for each of the five symphony concerts. Students and seniors can take advantage of a $10 discount on their ticket prices.
