21st Century Middle Eastern Music with Niyaz featuring Azam Ali at Soka Performing Arts Center

Aliso Viejo, CA – Niyaz featuring Azam Ali performs at Soka Performing Arts Center’s Black Box Theatre on Friday, January 26, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. as part of the World Music Series. Tickets are $30 for adults; $26 for students, seniors, and active military families; and $22 each for groups of 10 or more. Purchase tickets online at or by calling 949-480-4ART (4278).

Niyaz has created a twenty-first century global trance tradition by seamlessly blending medieval Sufi poetry and folk songs from their native Iran and its surrounding countries in the Persian Gulf, with rich acoustic instrumentation and state-of-the-art modern electronics. Described by the Huffington Post as “an evolutionary force in contemporary Middle Eastern music,” the group is comprised of vocalist Azam Ali and Loga Ramin Torkian, and will be joined by a dervish dancer.

Hailed for her “angelic, ghostly tone” by World Music Central, frontwoman Azam Ali is a vocalist and two-time Juno Award nominee. Torkian is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and Juno Award Nominee. In March 2015, Niyaz released their fourth full-length studio album entitled The Fourth Light, a tribute to the first female Sufi mystic and poet Rabia Al Basri, who was born in eighth-century Iraq. The Fourth Light has received rave reviews and features on the BBC World Service, Huffington Post, NPR, PRI’s The World, and MTV Iggy.

Founded in 2004, Niyaz boasts three best-selling and critically acclaimed albums released on Six Degrees Records, all of which have debuted at number one on iTunes and garnered the band an incredible amount of media attention including features on NPR and PRI. Niyaz is committed to creating music with a deep social message aimed at uniting people from different cultural and religious backgrounds through their shared humanity.

This event is sponsored in part by Farhang Foundation, a non-religious, non-political, and not-for-profit foundation with a mission to celebrate and promote Iranian art and culture for the benefit of the community at large. Learn more at
