Meet the Author Series with Michael Golden, Professor of Music Composition & Theory

Professor Michael Golden presented the work leading to and following from his paper, “Music Emergent: Autopoiesis and Connected Worlds” (https://escholarship.org/uc/item/0qr0z45g).  This paper was initially presented at the conference, “Body of Knowledge: Embodied Cognition and the Arts,” held at UC Irvine in 2016. Beginning from the question of why humans do this thing we call music, Dr. Golden’s research draws from diverse fields ranging from ethnomusicology to neuroscience, evolution and human development to the Santiago theory, and ecology to “4E cognition.” In linking these fields, his central thesis is that musicking is essentially ecological behavior, something we do that enhances our connection to our social, physical and metaphysical environments. Following a brief discussion of possible implications and applications of musical activity in efforts towards peacebuilding, for example, he concluded with concert video excerpts of a work of “ecology-inspired” composition.
