John Cruz & Ernie Cruz Jr. on Sunday, November 13, 2016 - CANCELLED
We are deeply saddened by the news that our friend, Ernie Cruz, Jr. passed away on September 20th. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time. For more information about the sudden passing of Ernie, please see the article in the Honolulu Star Advertiser: http://www.staradvertiser.com/2016/09/20/breaking-news/hawaii-musician-ernie-cruz-jr-dies-at-sandy-beach/.
At this time, we will be cancelling this performance and removing it from the World Music Series. It is our hope to be able to present a tribute to the life and music of Ernie Cruz, Jr. in the relatively near future.
Please see updated Series Package prices above for the revised four (4) performance series.
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 8 p.m.
HBE is comprised of seven brothers from the south side of Chicago and their fascinating story is told in the documentary Brothers Hypnotic. Freely mixing the brass band tradition with generous doses of hip hop, soul, and funk, creating an intoxicating and boisterous blend, they have toured with Prince, Mos Def, Mick Jones (The Clash), and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz).
African Guitar Summit on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 3 p.m.
Juno Award winners for 2005 World Music Album of the Year and nominated again in 2007, this collective unites the talents of several African musicians: guitarist and singer Alpha YaYa Diallo from Guinea; from Madagascar, the quicksilver guitars and harmonies of Donné Roberts and Madagascar Slim; and master percussionist Kofi Ackah from Ghana.
With artists from Alaska and Greenland, Pamyua showcases Inuit culture and shares indigenous knowledge and history through music and dance. Often described as “Inuit Soul Music,” their style derives from traditional melodies reinterpreted with contemporary vocalization and instrumentation. Pamyua (pronounced bum-yo-ah) is a Yup’ik Inuit word meaning “encore.”
