Note: This message was delivered to SUA students via email on April 27, 2024.

Dear students,

I’m sure that many of you have been hearing about student demonstrations taking place on college campuses across the country regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the disturbing arrests that have followed. SUA’s approach to peaceful demonstrations is guided by three equally important principles: 1) the need to support the safety and security of all students, faculty and staff; 2) the need to uphold the free expression of our community; and 3) the need to minimize disruption to the university’s core educational and administrative functions. I have been so impressed with how our students have engaged in these incredibly difficult challenges we are faced with in the world today with such conviction, care, and humanity.

Some of you may be exploring options to express your voice at the Peace Festival or other campus community events to amplify your message beyond SUA. If you are planning to host a demonstration, I want you to know that we support your ability to do so. We believe and have full confidence that you will express your voice through peaceful demonstration.

With demonstrations at other university campuses escalating due to the presence of off-campus individuals, we want to prioritize the safety of our students and the entire SUA community. And we want to do everything we can to ensure the safety of students who chose to exercise their right to freedom of speech. Toward that end, if you are planning to host a demonstration, please contact the Office of Student Activities at mhobby@soka.edu or r.duran@soka.edu for coordination so that all possible concerns can be addressed and thought through.

Please know that I’m also available to address any questions or concerns, so please do not hesitate to reach out if you would like to discuss anything.

Sincerely,

-Hyon
