On Nov. 24, members of the SUA community and the broader public gathered online for a webinar examining the Israel-Palestine conflict. Hosted by Academic Affairs in collaboration with the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Human Rights, panelists explored the impact of the attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Israeli invasion of Gaza, which have resulted in over 40,000 Palestinian deaths, the relocation of nearly 60,000 Israelis, and the displacement of more than one million Lebanese. With the conflict threatening to engulf the entire region, the webinar considered possible futures for Israelis and Palestinians while grappling with unresolved questions of rights and justice that continue to shape the situation.

The distinguished panelists included Farid Abdel-Nour, professor and chair of political science at San Diego State, where he helped found the Center for Islamic and Arabic Studies; Samer Abdelrazzak, head of diplomatic and international relations (Fatah shadow leadership) and chair of the Jerusalem Development Fund; Gershon Baskin, Israeli columnist, social and political activist, and founder of IPCRI, a jointly run Israeli and Palestinian think tank; and Lisa MacLeod, associate professor of international relations, director of the International Studies concentration, and assistant dean of student success at SUA. Michael Weiner, professor of East Asian history and International Studies and executive vice president for Academic Affairs at SUA, moderated the discussion.

Featuring a diverse range of perspectives and insights from the panelists, the webinar provided an essential forum for educators to consider how to engage students in the many dimensions of this complex conflict.
