Writing Center Policy on AI
At SUA, we value writing as a powerful tool for learning and communication. Although artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and DALL-E offer new possibilities, they can also pose challenges to critical thinking and intellectual growth. The SUA Writing Center is here to help you navigate these complexities through personalized, human-centered conversations about your ideas and writing processes, whether you utilize AI or not.
Each faculty member or course assignment may have specific instructions regarding AI use. It is your responsibility to understand and disclose the level of AI use allowed for a given course project. Additionally, all students must adhere to SUA’s academic honesty policy, which prohibits representing the work of others, including artificial intelligence, as their own.
If you are using AI as a writing tool, our writing center staff will work with you to evaluate AI-generated outputs, integrate them effectively, and ensure that each student’s unique voice remains central. We will encourage you to reflect critically on why and how you are using AI tools—whether it is to enhance efficiency, brainstorm, or improve clarity—and to consider how these choices align with your learning goals. We may also help you avoid over-reliance on AI, which can undermine cognitive functions such as decision-making, critical thinking, and analytical prowess. To combat this, tutors can help you to critically assess AI’s tendency to produce inaccurate, fabricated, and biased outputs.
Writing Center staff are committed to helping you make the most of AI tools while addressing their limitations through human-to-human conversations. The SUA Writing Center supports students in developing writing excellence across the disciplines. We invite you to visit us for guidance, feedback, and discussions that will help you grow as a writer and thinker in this evolving digital age.
